Your Basal Metabolic Rate is the energy cost of simply being alive: breathing, circulation, brain function, cell repair. For most people it is 60–70% of all calories burned in a day.

This calculator uses the Mifflin-St Jeor equation, the most validated formula for healthy adults. Multiply the result by an activity factor (see the calorie calculator) for your full daily needs.

How to use this calculator

Enter your age, gender, height and weight to learn your Basal Metabolic Rate: the calories your body uses each day at complete rest.

  1. Enter your Age in years.
  2. Select your Gender from the dropdown.
  3. Enter your Height in centimetres and Weight in kilograms.
  4. Read your BMR per day, plus the handy per-hour and per-week breakdowns.

Frequently asked questions

What does this calculator compute and what are the inputs?

It computes your BMR, the calories needed to keep your body running if you did nothing all day: breathing, circulation, brain function. The four inputs are age, gender, height and weight, because each shifts your resting burn.

Which formula does it use?

The Mifflin-St Jeor equation: 10 x weight in kg, plus 6.25 x height in cm, minus 5 x age in years, plus 5 for men or minus 161 for women. It is the most widely validated BMR formula for healthy adults.

Can you show a worked example?

A 30-year-old woman, 165 cm and 60 kg: 600 + 1,031.25 - 150 - 161 gives a BMR of about 1,320 kcal per day. That is the burn at total rest; any movement at all sits on top of it.

Is BMR the same as my daily calorie need?

No: BMR usually covers only 60 to 70% of your total daily burn, with the rest coming from movement and exercise. Multiply your BMR by an activity factor, or use the calorie calculator on this site, to get your full daily target. This is an estimate, not medical advice.
